That is a darn good question. I have to say that there is something intrinsically (if not strangely) fascinating with the idea of spear fishing for catfish and bass! I haven't been to Norris in some time, but we have some folks on the list who live just feet from it. Maybe one of them could give an estimate of what the water clarity is like at different times of the year.
Bill care to grab your tape measure and and plop yourself into the drink and report back?

Many years ago, I did my check out advanced night dive in Norris, which freaked out a couple of the guys in the class.
Norris typically has poor visibility because of the particulate and algae in the water but there are clear areas as well. There are places where you will hit some really clear water.
Norris has thermoclines - places where there is a sudden change in temperature from warmer water to colder water that can vary as much as 10-15 degrees. You need to have an idea of water temps at the depth you plan to dive. And the lake will "turn over", bands of cold water rising and warm water sinking.
At times, the water is clear enough to see 15 feet ahead. But I would not plan on it.
There are some very interesting dive spots, but you have to know where they are. There was once a mill set up inside the mouth of a cave and the wheel was turned by the stream coming out of the cave. Parts of the mill are still there, but (depending upon the time of year and the TVA draw) the cave is ~ 100 feet down (deeper than most pleasure divers want to go and you need to be cave certified to dive the cave). There are silos and foundations in various areas. But there are also trees and tree stumps (which is what freaked out my dive partner on the night dive with high particulate and zero visibility).
No visibility diving is a necessary part of search and rescue training, but not a good choice if you are just learning to dive. Because of the density of the water, it's a may be a good idea to dive on a rope with someone who knows the dive. Be sure to have light with you. |

My "depth" of experience in Norris is more limited than Shirlee's, in that I haven't used a tank. I've snorkled a few times right where we live, mostly during summer months, and the visibility down to maybe 12' is almost always poor. If there's any boat traffic at all, the suspended solids (mostly mud washed up from the bottom near the shoreline) pretty much obscures everything beyond a couple feet. You could go out to deeper water to snorkle where the water's clearer, but there's not much to see and few fish.
I believe Norris would yield some facinating places to dive with a tank so you could go deep and stay there, but I don't care for it (based on my limited experience) for snorkling. YMMV |
